VALUE DELIVERED

Forest NJ was contracted by i/o New Jersey as a prime contractor to provide electrical services for the conversion of an existing warehouse into usable data center space. The first phase of the project was begun in August 2011 and was substantially complete at the end of January 2012. Future plans for the site include an 180,000 s.f. office space and an additional 550,000 s.f. of Data Center space.

CLIENT OBJECTIVES

The client wanted to provide the infrastructure required to support the installation of 140 modular data units into an existing warehouse. Construction has to be scheduled so as to minimize impact to the existing facility and adjacent tenants. The installation had to be designed and installed to provide for future expansion flexibility.

SCOPE OF SERVICES

Phase I of the i/o Data Center project consisted of the renovation of 187,000 s.f. of an existing warehouse space. Forest worked closely with the owner and design engineer to provide design and installation of an electrical infrastructure capable of supporting the additional aggregate critical load of 10MW. The installation consists of (8) 13.8 KV 2.5 MW generators, (4) 4000A 13.8 KV Unit Substations, (4) 13.8 KV FIS switches, a 13.8 KV paralleling gear and 480V Switchboards and distribution equipment. Forest was responsible for the layout and coordination of over (46) 13.8 KV feeders The design and installation of a new building fire alarm system was also provided.

SOLUTIONS

Forest was able to utilize their extensive background in Data Center construction to assist i/o in the design, installation and commissioning of the Edison Facility. Forest’s on site BIM designers were instrumental in providing accurate coordinated drawings in a timely fashion, thereby minimizing construction delays due to coordination and lead times. Forest worked directly with the electrical equipment manufacturer to ensure that the design and construction of the equipment met the strict criteria demanded by i/o. Forest, working in conjunction with i/o , developed the facility commissioning scripts and oversaw both the NETA acceptance testing and commissioning of the new facility.

BACKGROUND

i/o is one of the fastest growing data center providers in the world. Their unique modular approach allows for white space installation in a fraction of the time required for traditional build out, resulting a more efficient, cost effective installation.
