Value Delivered
Forest Electric New Jersey (Forest NJ) led construction, engineering, and design for a 4,300-square-foot, 3 MW combined heat and power plant that housed within an existing utility space of a confidential pharmaceutical client. With careful design and installation sequencing, Forest NJ overcame unique design and rigging challenges imposed by spatial constraints. The completed plant produces 3 MW of 4160V electricity, 4,000-pounds-per-hour of 125-psig steam, and 5.4 million BTU per hour of hot water for heating.
Client Objectives
This pharmaceutical client wanted to build a new cogeneration unit that would serve as a combined heat and power plant. They required a unique design approach that would mitigate severe space limitations and wanted a finished product that allowed minimal noise infiltration into the existing facility.
Solutions
Forest NJ provided constructing, engineering, and design of all cogeneration equipment, including:
- Design and construction of a 3MW reciprocating engine-generator
- Design and construction of a 4,000-pounds-per-hour heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) and four heat recovery pumps
- Unique, spatially economic, three-level vertical design
- Installation of a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) unit
- Installation of an economizer and gas booster
- Sourcing and installation of six engine room fans, consisting of three supply fans and three exhaust fans
- Installation of a 2,000-gallon urea tank
- Addition of a sound-attenuating room to limit noise infiltration throughout the facility
- Development of on-site staffing strategy that utilized existing boiler room operators
Client Background
This pharmaceutical company is a manufacturer of bulk organic and inorganic medicinal chemicals.
